Practical checks to reduce the risk of fake listings, impersonation, suspicious payments and account compromise.
Online property listings require independent verification. A platform badge should never replace your own due diligence.
Before paying
Verify the property, identity/authority of the person receiving money, rental terms, payment recipient and relevant documents. Avoid sending funds solely because of a chat message or urgency claim.
Protect authentication details
Never share passwords, OTPs, UPI PINs, card PINs or remote-access credentials through HomeofIndia messages or support forms.
Common red flags
- Unusually low rent compared with similar properties.
- Refusal to show the property or provide reasonable supporting information.
- Pressure for immediate advance payment.
- Requests to pay an unrelated third party.
- Duplicate listings or inconsistent identity details.
- Requests to move conversations to suspicious channels or install remote-access software.
